Want to feel stronger, happier and healthier? Add vitamin D!

If you feel a little tired, maybe even low. And if you feel like life is not as much fun as it use to be. It might actually be a case of vitamin D deficiency.

If you, like me live in a country where the winters are long and you are not adding extra vitamin D, there really is a great risk of just that. 80% of our vitamin D intake actually comes from the sun and in the northern hemisphere there is not much sun at all during winter and even those really sunny winter days don’t help. The UVB rays are, during winter, absorbed by the atmosphere before reaching us and our skin and help create vitamin D.

To have a healthy body and a healthy mind vitamin D really is essential. Vitamin D is important to have a strong and healthy bone structure and it is also important to keep our mood in balance.

The first symptoms of vitamin D deficiency is muscle ache, especially in pelvis, neck and shoulders. Also your immune system will suffer from low vitamin D levels.

Foods that are rich in vitamin D is fatty fish (caught in the wild), mushrooms (picked in the wild) and there are also some in eggs, chicken and milk. However, this will still only make up for 20% of what you need daily.

I always encourage people to find a good, herbal based multi vitamin in order to keep your vitamin and mineral levels on a balanced level all year round. However, if you feel you only want to add vitamin D, make sure the vitamins you take are herbal based and not synthetic. Unfortunately the cheapest ones generally are synthetic.

Those of you who, like me, have a darker shade of skin will need extra vitamin D even more as paler skin actually convert the UVB rays into vitamin D much easier.

In some studies there are even claims that low vitamin D levels could make you more susceptible to cancer. Both prostate, breast and colon cancer.

Once again, I highly recommend a good, herbal based multi vitamin, but if you for some reason can’t eat multi vitamins, then please (provided you live on the northern part of the globe) do add up on your vitamin D’s!
