E numbers – dangerous or necessary?

e-numbers - dangerous or necessaryFor many years I’ve read on the back of packagea and tried to avoid E numbers. The reason is that I try to avoid synthetic substances that are difficult for the body to process. Gradually, I started thinking. Are E numbers really as dangerous as I’ve heard. What is E numbers, really?

As usual when I get curious I started to read about it. I soon stumbled across a very interesting documentary made ​​by the BBC. Here is a brief summary of what I’ve read and listened to:

The E in E numbers stands for Europe. Many of the E numbers available we also have in our own bodies. For example, in our stomach and our sweat. E numbers are also naturally present in a number  of fruits and vegetables, and it is precisely from these that most E numbers are extracted. This does of course not mean that all E numbers are good, but it means that not all are dangerous or synthetic. On the contrary, they can be healthy and natural, and even necessary.

It’s always exciting when a substance or a particular ingredient ends up in the media. It easily becomes one-dimensional and simplistic. One should avoid synthetic substances in food (and supplements), and many preservatives and E numbers should be avoided, but it is not that simple, unfortunately. Both the E numbers and preservatives can be natural. To avoid synthetic E numbers and preservatives my tip is to cook as much as possible from scratch. And to eat as varied as possible.

I think it is good to be careful about what you eat, but as I wrote in a previous post, it’s even more important to dare to live!

    I’ve never even thought about what to avoid and what not to when it comes to food.

      Well I always think it is interesting to know what I eat and can thereby chose – healthy or less healthy 🙂

    It is great you are pointing this out. Too many myths are swirling around. To make it even more difficult; not all “natural” substances are good either. 🙂
