Breakfast and cortisol – why you should never skip breakfast

I’m sure you have heard about breakfast being the most important meal of the day. My mum used to tell me that all the time. Still, I never did for a long time. And if I did have something in the morning it was a quick cup of coffee. Luckily I have grown up.

Breakfast is important for various reasons. There are many scientific reports about breakfast and cortisol and also about its effect on our insulin sensitivity. At the end of this post there are a few links to pages explaining this in more detail. I have chosen to here only give you a summary of the what I feel are the most important points.

  • When you wake up your metabolism is at its lowest, in order to kick it into gear your body need food!
  • To wake up your body will produce extra amount of cortisol, and in order to balance that back your body needs food, preferably protein and fibers.
  • Not eating breakfast will leave your level of cortisol way too high and might increasing the risk for obesity, insulin resistance, diabetes and heart disease. (Read more about why here)
  • Your breakfast is the time when you set the tone of the day. Think of breakfast as a time to gather energy and refocus in order to have a productive, creative day full of energy!

So if you don’t already eat breakfast every morning, make a point of starting tomorrow! There are of course loads of different breakfast tips, but to start with, just eat what you feel is easiest. Personally I eat oatmeal (full grain) porridge with cinnamon, agave syrup and oatmilk. If you have, add a few berries. And of course my daily vitamins. Not much protein there, but I will then have some protein as my “snack”, like a boiled egg, around 10. This works really well for me during the weeks.

So, never skip breakfast again! 🙂
