Your help to sustainable health and redesigning your body
Are you easily stressed?
When I was really young, I never got stressed. I did not understand what others was getting all worked up over what I perceived as “nothing”. Unfortunately it didn’t last. When I was about 30, I was well acquainted with stress and its negative effects. Yet I continued to tell myself that I liked the stress. That I was one of those people that need stress to to push myself and get things done. And that because I loved that feeling of being really busy, then it was all “positive stress”. That whether its positive or negative, stress is stress. It’s true that positive stress can make us achieve great things, but only if it’s very limited. After a while – stress is just stress.
Already when I was in my twenties I started having problems sleeping, but over time it got worse and worse, and as it did, my stress resistance got worse and worse. I got to a point when I wanted to understand. What is stress and why do we become stressed? Why do some of us seem more stress resistant than others? And most importantly, what can you do about it?
What is stress?
Very simplified so you can say that stress is a way for the body to prepare for a fight and / or flight situation. The reaction is unconscious and does it via the autonomic (self-governing) nervous system and releases stress hormones into the blood (adrenaline, noradrenaline and cortisol). The body ensures tha extra sugar and fat enters the blood for energy, the heart beats faster, blood pressure rises and blood circulation to the muscles increases. The body gets a real boost – all to deal with a physical effort.
In the short term, it is just an energy boost, but in the longer term, it may lead to too high levels of sugar and fat in our blood and the body leaching of nutrients, especially B vitamins and magnesium.
Why do some people get more easily stressed?
There are different reasons to why we get stressed or how easily influenced we are by stress. It can for instance be about innate sensibility to pressure but also other things such as hypersensitivity to certain foods, hormonal changes, or how receptive your body is to infections. Some people for exemple, quickly react with anxiety in stressful situations.
How do you deal with stress? Are you easily affected or have you found ways to avoid it?
Tomorrow I’ll be back with tips about what to do to reduce stress!
