Never ever quit!

Yesterday I went to see a magnificent exhibition about Tutankhamun. All the original pieces from his grave have been duplicated and the exhibition takes you through the history of ancient Egypt up to the point when Carter began dreaming about finding the grave of Tutankhamun, and then his struggle and his final success when finding the grave, explore it and understand it.

As I was going through the exhibition I was struck by how never ever giving up on your dream is not only essential to your success but paramount. Carter started the excavation, after having no job and no funds to pursuit his dreams, but never giving it up. He divided the area of excavation into squares. When they had searched all but one, his financier was ready to give up. But not Carter. So after determined persuation the financier Lord Carnarvon the excavation could go on, and after 10 years of nothing – the most intact Egyptian grave ever was found! Such an inspiring story!

And then it was the story of  the very famous Rosette stone. The Rosetta stone was inscripted with a decree in 198 BC. It was then rediscovered in 1799 by a soldier, Pierre-François Bouchard. The stone was unique because the decree was written in three different scripts, two which had not yet been possible to understand and then ancient greek, a well known language. This provided a first ever possibility to actually decipher the hieroglyphs. Many language specialists now dove into the task of  succeeding this ground breaking task.

Pierre-François Bouchard, who had rediscovered the stone was determined to be the first to succeed. And he was. 20 years later!

The Rosetta stone had such an important significance that the term Rosetta Stone is now used in other contexts as the name for the essential clue to a new field of knowledge.

Amazing! 10 and 20 years before the results they were looking for. For me this is so inspirational and such an important thing to keep in mind when sometimes struggling in my own business and when having a day when nothing seems to go my way.

The lesson? Just never ever, ever quit!

Do you have any favourite stories of perseverance? Some special story you use to inspire yourself when success isn’t happening as fast as you’d wish?

This is an exact replica of the famous Rosetta stone

Very inspirational blog. Thank you for posting. The important thing is to never give up. You have to believe in yourself and what you are doing.

Thank you Tami! Yes, believing in yourself is so important too and as easy as it sounds it is sometimes the hardest thing! 🙂

Not that far from Mount Rushmore in South Dakota is the Crazy Horse monument. It was started by a man, Korczak Ziolkowski, who helped sculptor Gutzon Borglum with the Mt. Rushmore project. Native Americans invited Ziolkowski back to create a monument honoring one of their great men. He labored almost single handled for years. Eventually his 10 children grew old enough to help him and 7 of them still work on the project. The monument was started in 1947 and probably won’t be finished in my lifetime. I’ve been fortunate enough to visit it twice, in 1979 and in 2002. Now, a multi-generational project – that is never giving up!
