Your help to sustainable health and redesigning your body

Love – the core of everything!

Today I read a beautiful poem by Caro Ness. Her post “A four letter word” about love stirred something inside of me. The fact that love is important is certainly not news or that loving your self is important in order to love others. Still. It has taken me so many years to really understand the significance of this.

In my post “Vulnerability – essential to healthy living” I referenced to Brené Brown PhD and her TEDtalk on vulnerability (and her second talk on shame). In this talk she mentioned the damage we do our children when we don’t love them unconditionally and how difficult it can be as a parent. I have worked as a teacher over 10 years and I have see what she means first hand. So many children feel they are only worth something if they do well in school, have friends, are popular etc etc. Their parents love them, but in their enthusiasm to help them, wanting what they feel is best for them, they forget to just love them. Not trying to help and give advice, not pressuring them into doing better because they can, not trying to influence them on what we feel would be the right way. Just love them.

I grew up in a family where it was always obvious I was loved, but to me as a child it could sometimes feel conditioned. After I started to share these thoughts with others i realize how very common this is. How many of us actually feel we have to achieve in order to be worthy of love.

So what does this have to do with health? Well, I’ve come to understand one thing. If we don’t love where we are, we will never move forward. And loving where we are, includes loving what we are and who we are – now.

So, are you trying to lead a healthier life? Are you trying to lose weight? Gain weight? Build muscles? Eat healthier? Etc, etc. Ask yourself – do I love my self today? If not. Start there. This is something I practice every day and some days are easier than others, but I know it’s key. Your chances of creating the healthy life you want will be so much greater.

Love might only be a four letter word, but it is the core of everything!
