Are your supplements dangerous?

pills-3734b1What do you know about your supplements?

In my post What is happening to our food I mentioned the decline of nutrients in our food and the need for supplements. However, what I didn’t mention is the importance of knowing what supplement your are eating. How are they manufactured? Are there any research gone into them?

About two years ago, I started reading up on supplements. I realized quickly that the best dietary supplements are natural and not synthetic. What I did not know was that synthetic supplements are not only not good, they can even be dangerous!

The most common dietary supplements today are synthetic, ie produced in laboratories. Synthetic supplements are usually cheaper. Instead of natural supplements made from vegetables, herbs or anything that is edible synthetic supplements are made of so called mineral oil, a biproduct from the petrolium industry.

Unfortunately our body will struggle to actually absorb the content in a synthetic vitamin, and I think it’s bad enough that these are on the market, but even worse is that these supplements can actually be dangerous by draining the body of nutrients instead of boosting it!

For a more detailed explanation of why listening is:

And what is it our synthetic vitamins contain?

I appreciate the information here. I recently had an issue with my blood that was eventually traced to a popular brand of multivitamin.

I agree, real food is essential and so, so important. However, I no longer believe it’s enough. My life has changed radically since I began eating good, natural and tested vitamins.

  3. Hi Matila, great info. Real food vitamins are important for great health. Just posted on my blog yesterday why choose a daily multi vitamin. So important for good health in today’s world of toxins, pollution and poor soil quality just to name a few reasons. Thanks for sharing. Best Regards, Wendy

I agree that eating a nutritionally sound meal is the best. Education in nutrition should be taught in schools and at medical school. However to say a vitamin should have a natural source forgets that vitamins are the product of a series of chemical reactions undertaken within the cell. Their syntheses is just as natural as that of vitamins made in extra-cellular systems.

Of course it’s all chemical in that it’s all produced in labs, but that is not what I mean with synthetic. Synthetic means that the content of the pill has nothing to do with food, vegetables or herbs.
